Overview

The project aimed to redesign the background of an existing washing machine UI panel, provided by the client in an Illustrator file. The primary goal was to enhance the aesthetics of the panel while maintaining its functionality. The design had to align with strict client specifications. Three design concepts were proposed, each with a unique visual style.

Client Brief & Specifications

The process began by thoroughly understanding the client’s specifications for the washing machine UI panel. These specifications were essential to ensure that the final designs fit within the mechanical and functional constraints of the panel.

Concept Development

With the client’s needs in mind, three design concepts were created, each with distinct visual styles that aligned with futuristic themes while being practical for the washing machine’s functionality.

Design Iterations

The design process included client feedback sessions, where we refined the concepts based on their preferences, adjusting color schemes, proportions, and detailing to ensure the final designs met expectations.

Prototyping & Finalization

Once the designs were finalized, high-fidelity mockups were created, showcasing each concept’s visual elements. These mockups also highlighted key UI components such as buttons and dials, ensuring the aesthetics complemented functionality.

Client Specifications

The client provided the UI panel specifications, which detailed the exact requirements and constraints for the design. This was crucial to ensure that any proposed designs would work within the constraints of the existing panel layout.

Moodboard Development

Research and moodboards were created for each concept to visualize the direction and style, ensuring that the designs met the futuristic and functional expectations.

CONCEPT 1

Concept 1 is inspired by the fundamental principles of futuristic design, featuring asymmetrical forms, flowing lines, and a minimalist color palette primarily consisting of blues, blacks, greys, and whites. The intentional use of high-gloss silver accents enhances the sleekness and modernity of the visual style, evoking a sense of movement and innovation.

Concept 2's visual style is inspired by silver metallic finishes. Metallic finishes provide a lustrous and shimmering effect. Neutral colors like greys, blues, and browns complement the metallic finish.

Concept 3's visual style draws inspiration from the shimmering quality of liquid silver and the serene flow of blue water. The strategic use of silver accents introduces an element of elegance and a futuristic vibe to the design. The gentle curves and soft gradients embody the dynamic nature of flowing water, conveying a sense of movement and fluidity rather than static shapes. This combination evokes a refreshing and modern aesthetic.

CONCEPT 3 UI DESIGN

Learnings

The project provided a valuable learning experience in balancing aesthetics with functionality, especially when designing for a product with strict specifications like a washing machine UI panel. While the client ultimately chose a plain background due to printing constraints, the process allowed me to explore different visual styles, such as metallic finishes and flowing gradients, and adapt these ideas to real-world limitations. It also emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration with the client and adhering to specifications, while still offering creative solutions. This experience strengthened my ability to design within functional constraints while maintaining visual appeal.
